Sport Massage

Firm, focused work to help tired muscles recover, loosen stiffness and keep you moving.

What is it?

The sport massage combines deep pressure, stretching and acupressure to work on the muscles you use most. It is fully customisable: the therapist can concentrate on legs after a hike or run, shoulders after a gym session, or any area that tends to get sore or tight.

Benefits

• May help reduce muscle soreness and stiffness after exercise
• Helps improve range of movement
• Can be used before or after activity to keep muscles loose
• Focuses time on the areas that need it most

Who is it for?

Runners, hikers, cyclists, surfers, gym-goers, and anyone with a physically demanding job or a very active holiday in Madeira, from levadas to Pico do Areeiro.
Please tell us if you have a recent injury, swelling, bruising or a medical condition. Pressure is firm, so this is not the best choice if you only want to relax (see Relaxation Massage).

What to expect

1. A short assessment: which sport or activity, and which areas feel tight or sore
2. The therapist works on those areas with firm pressure, stretching and acupressure
3. You give feedback throughout. Firm should feel productive, not painful
4. Light stretching at the end

Duration and Price

Available in 30, 60 or 90 minutes. 30 minutes suits one area (legs or back). 60 to 90 minutes lets us cover several areas. Prices vary by shop.

How to prepare

Wear shorts or loose clothing. Drink water before and after. If you have trained very hard today, tell us. Avoid booking straight after an intense session if you are already very sore.

Frequently Asked Questions

Should I book before or after exercise?
Both work. Many guests book the day after a long hike, when stiffness appears.

Will it hurt?
Firm pressure can be intense in tight spots, but it should not be painful. Tell us if it is too much.

Can it focus on one area?
Yes, for example legs only.

Will I be sore afterwards?
Mild soreness for a day is common. Drink water and move gently.

Is it good for injuries?
It is a relaxation and recovery massage, not medical treatment. For injuries, see a health professional first.
